Esther Rantzen wanted the old–school BBC radio announcer Ronald Fletcher, who had worked with Bernard Braden on Braden's Week, and also on its predecessor On the Braden Beat, which was an ITV programme. (That's Life was a replacement for Braden's Week, which had been shelved after Braden appeared in a commercial.)
Fletcher had first performed his Odd Odes in 1937.
